What’s a Piano String Cover?

A piano string cover is a product used on grand pianos to slow down the process of rust and corrosion of piano strings. Quality string covers are made with 100% wool and are custom fit in size and shape for your model of piano. The string cover is designed to sit directly on top of the metal plate. Wooden poles, called battens, are typically fastened to the underside of the cover. Battens prevent contact between the soft cover and the strings.

Piano strings are made of non-coated steel wire. The lower bass strings are additionally wound with bare copper to add mass and weight. The non-coated steel wire and bare copper wire used for string making is highly subject to the corrosive nature of moisture and pollution. Piano string covers offer an excellent defense against rust and corrosion. And, as an added benefit, they keep dust and nearly all other damaging materials from getting into your piano.

I highly recommend string covers for all grand pianos. They are especially effective for anyone whose piano is located near the beach or in the mountains. Piano string covers are effective when left in the piano at all times, but can be easily removed when needed.
